In addition to celebrating your sweetie this month, February is also Library Lovers Month, dedicated to showing love for libraries and the people who run them. Instead of flowers and chocolate, there are some easy ways to show your appreciation for all the books, comfy space, free Wi-Fi, friendly faces and countless other services they provide every day, for all of us.

Here are 8 quick, simple ways to show support for your local library. And just like the library itself, they’re free.

Get a library card.

This is your ticket to all the magic. Sign up by going to your local branch. Some libraries offer a virtual card that can provide access to online services, so check your library’s website for instructions. It only takes a few minutes, and will pay off for years to come for both you and your library. The more registered cardholders, the more funding the library may receive.

Borrow a book.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a physical book or an ebook, audiobook or digital magazine in a reading app like Libby. Borrowing materials from the library helps to keep their circulation numbers high, and also keeps your wallet happy by saving a bundle on books.

Stop in for a visit.

Your presence is important. And it doesn’t hurt that libraries are cozy spots to hang out with quiet, comfortable couches and free Wi-Fi. Mine even has a fireplace for some added ambience! Get out of the house if you work from home, or use their meeting spaces for a professional atmosphere. It’s also a great place to meet up with a friend or take kids. Most libraries have children’s areas and in the winter, it can be a saving grace for caretakers to find free indoor activities.

I’m also a big fan of the library printer (does anyone have one at home these days?) and chatting with the librarians. There are tons of free resources—tax assistance, tutoring and homework help, job searching aids, technology access—the list goes on.

Follow your library on social media.

Not only will you stay up to date on library news and happenings, you’ll probably get some funny book-related memes out of it, too. Like, comment and share their posts or chat with them and tell them what you’re reading. They'd love to hear from you.

Vote in local elections.

Let your local legislators know your library is an important part of your neighborhood!

Tell family and friends about the library.

Spread the love and remind them of the great services the library offers if they haven’t been in awhile. Show them how to use the Libby app and check out ebooks and audiobooks without even leaving home. Teach your children to become lifelong library lovers by going for regular visits together.

Purchase from their gift shop or book sale.

OK, this one isn’t free, but it’s money well spent (I may have purchased a sweatshirt from my library while researching ideas). Check out their gift shop stocked with shirts, hats, totes and other fun merchandise that gives back and promotes your library every time you wear it.

The Friends of the Library often have book sales a few times per year as well. Grab a book for you or a friend—they make great gifts.

Thank a library worker.

The easiest, fastest, arguably most effective way to spread some love this month is with two little words: Thank you. The impact of acknowledging a librarian’s hard work and showing gratitude is immense. Try it out and make someone’s day!
