For the dad who loves Better Call Saul, and still quotes Chris Farley’s “Matt Foley” sketches

Comedy Comedy Comedy DramaComedy Comedy Comedy Drama by Bob Odenkirk

If dad loved Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Mr. Show with Bob and David, or early 90s Saturday Night Live, then he’ll love this tremendous autobiography from the man best known for playing Saul Goodman.

Odenkirk tracks his professional career — starting in Chicago where he met Chris Farley. Dad will learn that Odenkirk wrote the “Matt Foley” sketch for Farley, which lead to fame that Farley struggled with the rest of his life. Odenkirk shares great stories about meeting David Cross to write Mr. Show, one of the great sketch comedy shows of the 1990s. After a series of comedy busts, we get to the reason he could write a book: Saul Goodman. Dad will be shocked by his initial thoughts on playing the iconic Breaking Bad lawyer. He’ll discover who first said Saul would be its own spinoff, and what it was like to work with the other great actors on these iconic shows.

🎧 If dad likes to listen to audiobooks during his workout, make sure the audiobook version of Odenkirk’s autobiography is loaded onto his Libby.

For the dad who loves comics

All of the MarvelsAll of the Marvels by Douglas Wolk
🎧 Audiobook

Whether dad was a hardcore comic fan as a kid or got into them later in life, he’ll love Wolk’s deep dive of the entire Marvel catalog. Wolk read more than 27,000 comics in the Marvel Universe, and in this book, he makes sense of everything he read.

With Wolk’s added context of the era’s current events and cultural tentpoles, reading a 1960s or 70s comic makes so much more sense. If dad borrows something new in your library’s comics collection, Wolk’s book helps make sense of where the hero has been before and why he’s here today.

If dad’s Spider-Man mask comes out every Halloween, tell him to add this book in Libby.

For the dad who still tells stories about Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio

Summer of '49Summer of ’49 by David Halberstam
🎧 Audiobook

If dad takes sides in the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, or if he just loves baseball books, he’ll love this story of one of baseball’s best seasons.

The book is presented as the last summer before a cultural shift, that time between WWII and the postwar boom and the rapid growth in the 1950s. The Yankees and Red Sox battle for a championship throughout the summer, and the American League crown comes down to a New York-Boston game on the last day of the season.

Halberstam writes great tales of the star players — the difficult perfectionist Ted Williams, the aging superstar Joe DiMaggio, and plenty of other great characters whose names are a footnote in the history of these great teams.

For the dad who sends a Michael Scott GIF in every reply

Welcome to Dunder MifflinWelcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office by Brian Baumgartner
🎧 Audiobook

Anyone who loves The Office is going to love this oral history of the show. Brian Baumgartner, aka Kevin, and Ben Silverman, the show’s producer, interviewed their castmates in various platforms and collected their answers into this great compendium to one of the great shows in TV history.

I listened to the audiobook version of this one in...the office! Dad will love to do the same.

For the dad who still rocks

Born to RunBorn to Run by Bruce Springsteen
🎧 Audiobook

If your childhood road trips included dad singing Bruce’s greatest hits, recommend the Boss’ autobiography. It’s one of my favorite audiobooks. Read by Springsteen himself, dad will love it as part of his commute, workout, or gardening projects. Plus, he’ll get snippets of his favorite Springsteen hits.

This long book reads fast in your ears, and dad can easily relive those glory days in Bruce’s rock ‘n’ roll memoir.

For the sneakerhead dad

A History of Basketball in Fifteen SneakersA History of Basketball in Fifteen Sneakers by Russ Bengtson

Not every dad is a plain white sneaker guy. If your dad wore a clean pair of Jordans to a family wedding, or bought you your first pair of Chucks, recommend that dad read this book, preferably on his phone or tablet to see the color photographs of the shoes that helped make the NBA the game it is today.

Bengtson’s love letter to basketball through shoes is a great read for a dad whose fashion choices don’t embarrass the rest of the family.

For the dad looking for something longer

PinesThe Wayward Pines Trilogy by Blake Crouch
🎧 Audiobook

For this one, I consulted a friend who immediately recommended this title. This three-book series from Blake Crouch combines mystery, sci-fi, and horror.

The friend, who’s a dad, recommended this because the longer series gave him something to really sink his teeth into and he could look forward to the next story.

For the dad who refuses to share the secret recipe for those July 4th ribs

Project SmokeProject Smoke by Steven Raichlen

Raichlen has published many grilling books and hosts a popular PBS show about barbeque and smoking meat. What I like about his books is that it isn’t pretentious, and amateurs or experts will enjoy learning new ways to barbecue their favorite foods.
