They’re up to no good, but we’re still rooting for them!
On business trips I use the hotel room TV for morning background noise. This is usually a total life hack – the noise forces me to get up and stay up despite jet-lagged urges to crawl back under the covers. I hadn’t realized that this only works if nothing good is on TV. Garbage is easy to tune out, easy to shut off, but a good story can’t be ignored. One morning they were playing The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I knew nothing about, and I ended up late to my first appointment of the day because I was standing in front of the screen like the kid in Poltergeist. There’s something about a villain leading a story that compels viewers and readers with an irresistible force. What will they do next? What are they plotting? What do you mean I’m already running 10 minutes late?
