The Library Lover's Guide to Reinventing Yourself This Fall

I’ve always felt that fall should be the season for new beginnings. Maybe it’s because I always loved back to school time, or maybe it’s because I think it’s unrealistic to set big goals when it’s a frigid wasteland outside (I’m looking at you, New Year’s Resolutions) and productivity feels like a Herculean task. September is Self-Improvement Month, and if you've been quietly telling yourself that this is the season you finally make a change, I have good news. Everything you need to get started is probably already available to you, for free, through your local library.

Libraries have always been one of the great, underrated resources for personal reinvention. Whether you're after a new qualification, a creative outlet, a stronger financial foundation, or simply more time in a quiet room with a great book, here is everything your library card can do for you this fall.

Learn Something New on Your Own Schedule

One of the biggest barriers to self-improvement is time and accessibility, and in our current day and age, libraries have solved this problem with a variety of digital resources that you can access anytime, anywhere. Through Libby, cardholders have access to thousands of educational and entertainment titles across ebooks and audiobooks. Many libraries also give you access to newspapers like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Streaming services like Kanopy allow you to tap into both your academic and creative sides with courses on demand, award winning documentaries, and incredible indie films.

Invest in Your Career

If you're thinking about a career change, a promotion, or simply brushing up on professional skills, your library card is one of the most powerful tools in your corner. Many libraries offer free access to LinkedIn Learning, giving you on-demand access to thousands of courses in everything from project management to graphic design to data analysis. That kind of professional development could otherwise cost hundreds of dollars a year. Some libraries also offer career counselling services, résumé workshops, and one-on-one appointment programs to help you put your best foot forward. And don't overlook the practical stuff: many libraries offer free printing, scanning, and notary services which can be incredibly useful when you're updating your CV, signing a new contract, or filing paperwork for a new venture.

Learn a New Language

Whether you're preparing for a trip, connecting with family heritage, or simply challenging your brain in a new way, learning a language is one of the most rewarding forms of self-improvement and your library can help you do it for free. Many library systems offer access to tools like Mango Languages or Rosetta Stone, giving you structured, self-paced language learning across dozens of languages. Supplement your practice with foreign language ebooks and audiobooks through Libby, and you'll be surprised how quickly it adds up.

Get Your Finances in Order

Reinventing yourself sometimes starts with your relationship with money. Many libraries offer access to financial literacy resources, including tools like Morningstar for investment research, personal finance guides, and workshops on budgeting, debt management, and planning for the future. Some libraries also host tax aid clinics and legal aid programs which provide free access to professionals who can help you navigate the practical side of a major life change. If you're starting a business, changing jobs, or simply trying to get on steadier financial footing, make sure you see what your library offers before you start investing in other services.

Find Your Creative Outlet

Sometimes reinvention isn't about a career or a qualification, it's about reconnecting with your creative side. Many libraries now offer Maker Spaces, dedicated creative workshops equipped with tools like 3D printers, sewing machines, recording equipment, laser cutters, and podcast studios. These spaces exist specifically for people who want to make something, learn a craft, or explore a creative interest they've never had the resources to pursue. If you've been telling yourself you'd try bookbinding, music production, or digital design "someday," your library's Maker Space might be the push you need. Some libraries even offer access to Craftsy on Libby which provides resources ranging from basic instruction to advanced techniques for fabric and yarn crafts, baking, drawing, and much more.

Move Your Body

Many libraries now offer fitness and wellness programming, including yoga classes, workout sessions, and wellbeing workshops, often free or at a significantly reduced cost. Check your local branch's events listings to see what's available near you. Some libraries even offer bikes, birdwatching/nature kits, and park passes if you’re looking to get outside more!

Build Community

Perhaps the most underrated aspect of reinvention is doing it alongside other people. Libraries offer a wealth of community programming, such as author talks, lectures, workshops, and book clubs, that connect you with like-minded readers and learners in your area. Book clubs are a brilliant accountability tool: committing to reading and discussing a book each month is a small but meaningful habit, and the conversations that come out of them have a way of sparking ideas you wouldn't have found on your own. Many libraries also facilitate volunteer and mentorship programs, which can be just as transformative for the person giving their time as for the person receiving it.

A Quiet Space to Think

Finally, never underestimate the power the right space to focus. Libraries offer private study rooms and quiet workspaces, which can be incredibly helpful if your reinvention requires deep thinking, planning, or simply uninterrupted time with a notebook. Unlike a coffee shop or coworking space, there is no expectation to spend money when working at a library.
