Musicians, take note! How to find digital sheet music in the Libby app
If you’ve been keeping up with your local library, you’ve probably noticed that libraries are getting creative with the things you can borrow. Not only are books and magazines an option; items like board games, tools, craft kits, and more can be checked out for all to enjoy. Did you know that the same is true in Libby? While yes, it’s mostly ebooks and audiobooks, a little-known corner of the Libby collection is sheet music!
Now, you might be thinking, “What even IS sheet music?” Sheet music refers to a piece or collection of music to be read and played or sung by a singer or instrumentalist. This can be one song, or a collection of songs or pieces; either by one composer or many. If you ever took instrument lessons as a child (or as an adult—HIGHLY recommend, by the way), you may remember seeing instructional books with short pieces in them for you to practice new skills. You might also remember begging your parents to purchase The Lion King Songbook for you once you learned enough to play through all those amazing songs (oh wait, that might've just been me).
This stuff exists in Libby! Whether you’re looking for popular or classic sheet music for piano, guitar, ukulele, trumpet, cello, flute, clarinet, and more, it’s worth checking to see what your library offers in Libby. And while it might not be a huge part of your library’s digital collection, it’s something your library may be able to add. They might have physical sheet music selections as well, so don’t forget to check your local branch!
💡Tip: To see what’s available to you in Libby, type “printed music” or “sheet music” in the Search bar. You can also ask your local librarian.
Here are a couple of my current favorite songbooks in Libby:

The Mandalorian
by Ludwig Goransson
Ludwig Göransson is one of the “it” guys of film music since winning a Grammy and an Academy Award for Best Score for Black Panther in 2019. He’s here to stay; Göransson also just won a Golden Globe for the soundtrack to the film, Sinners. His music from The Mandalorian is unique and engaging, and I bet it’s fun to play.

Ukulele For Dummies
by Alistair Wood
Trying to teach yourself a new instrument? Took a class (maybe at the library) and want to brush up your skills? There’s a Libby title for that! Method books like this start with the basics, including terminology, how to hold the instrument, basic notes, and practice songs. It’s a fun winter activity, and learning an instrument as an adult helps keep your brain sharp!
Wicked, Kpop Demon Hunters, F1, and More Top Movies
by Various
If you can’t get “Golden” out of your head like the rest of the world, then check out the most recent top movie songs with this piano/vocal/guitar songbook. Many songbooks like this include chords for guitar (or for those piano players who prefer to read chords instead of notes). A lot of them specify if they’re for easy, intermediate, or advanced musicians, which can be helpful if you have a kiddo who is just starting out on their musical journey.

Classical Piano Masters, Early Intermediate Level
by Hal Leonard Corp.
This collection includes some of the most often taught original piano literature by dozens of composers of the past and has been compiled by difficulty level. A lot of these are classics for a reason! Their melodies are enjoyable and complex enough to keep the budding pianist challenged and entertained.
From the polyphonic music of Bach in the Baroque era to Leonard Cohen’s emotional melodic lines and lyrics to K-pop Demon Hunters’ energizing beats and singable melodies, music should be accessible to all. Libraries and Libby can help make that possible! Maybe next time you hear “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” you’ll think of 10-year-old Maria jamming away in her room and be inspired to pick up a songbook for yourself.
