Biographer of a nation: Ron Chernow’s portraits of American icons

Mom. Apple pie. Ron Chernow biographies.

Some things are quintessentially American, and there are few better ways to celebrate America’s birthday than with a hamburger and a Ron Chernow biography. He started his remarkable career with The House of Morgan, examining the financial empire that typifies the Gilded Age.

Since then, he’s taken on other financial houses and American giants, most recently tackling the life of Mark Twain, the man who coined the term Gilded Age.

Beyond the basics

What makes Chernow’s biographies so special? First of all, it's the wonderful depth of his works. When he writes someone's life, he doesn't just focus on the most famous moments, but offers a complete examination from cradle to grave. Actually, he usually starts before the cradle, giving a history of the subjects’ parents and how they influenced their children's lives.

A good example of what I'm talking about is in his Pulitzer Prize winning biography of George Washington. In the book, he spends a long, fascinating amount of time on Washington’s mother and their relationship. (She doesn't always come across well in Chernow’s telling. Yes, Chernow expertly paints the Revolutionary War battles and Washington’s time as president, but he never skimps on his childhood, his life as a simple surveyor, or his return to his beloved Mount Vernon after his presidency.

What you didn’t learn in school

Another thing is that Chernow really cares about these less famous moments. In this interview, Chernow mentions the unique challenge of writing the biography of someone who wrote a famous memoir. (In this case, Ulysses S. Grant, whose Personal Memoirs is considered an American classic.)

Chernow said the key, at least in part, is to tackle what the subject ignored. In Grant’s case, this meant not just writing about the Civil War, but Grant’s just as significant role in Reconstruction and then his presidency, as well as his alcoholism.

But what I really love about Chernow’s books is his enthusiasm. He has a genuine excitement about his subjects, and you can feel it on every page. It's a huge reason why you can listen to all 36+ hours of Alexander Hamilton and say, “Is that all? I could stand hear a little more.” (Scott Brick’s excellent narration helps with that, too.)

His latest book—the father of American literature

And so much of Chernow’s passion is on display in his latest book on Twain, released in May. In addition to being the remarkable novelist we usually think of him as, Twain was also an enthusiastic, if not always good, businessman. This gave Chernow a chance to return to the themes of his earliest books about American financiers. But Twain was also one of the most astute political pundits in American history, bringing in Chernow’s political acuity from his more recent books about presidents and cabinet secretaries.

Many in his day, including himself, considered Mark Twain not to be an American, but the American. It's only fitting, then, that the American biographer has finally written his life story.
