Tears are cathartic. Reading about someone else’s emotional journey gives us more strength for our own. No one seems to have mastered this in the modern novel more than Colleen Hoover, who manages to write books that keep us turning the pages furiously, while simultaneously making sure that we don’t have snot dripping onto our ereaders. She makes us feel all that it is to be human: joy, love, sadness, friendship.

If you’re looking to add more titles to your TBR that are reminiscent of Hoover’s styleromantic, thrilling, but full of emotionlook no further than these great reads available in the Libby app from your library.

If you have issues with Valentine’s Day:

The No-Show

The No-Show by Beth O’Leary

This book made me gasp and sob in bed next to my sleeping husband. I don’t want to mention too much about this one, other than that Beth O’Leary can write a beautiful, unexpected story. Shioban, Miranda and Jane are all being stood up on Valentine’s Day, which is bad enough. It becomes that much worse when we, the readers, realize that they’re all being stood up by the same man. Why has he left all these women alone on Valentine’s Day? Is he worthy of redemption and love? Read on to find out (but have tissues!).

If you still think of the one who got away:

Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here by Renée Carlino

Charlotte, like many people in their 20s, is trying to figure out who she is and what place she has in the world. As she tries to figure out what she wants, she also has an amazing one-night stand with Adam, with whom she feels an instant connection. The next morning, everything changes, and while she leaves, she doesn’t find herself able to move on quickly. Time passes, and she meets minor league baseball player and all-around nice guy, Seth, and even though she still thinks of Adam, they begin dating. However, the ghosts of her past still linger, and she’ll be forced to make some serious decisions that impact all of them.

If you might as well face it:

Addicted to You

Addicted to You by Krista and Becca Ritchie

My intro line to this is a bit flip, considering that this book does deal with the very real issues of addiction in both of our main characters. Lily is a sex addict, and Lo is an alcoholic. They’re real friends, but they’re fake dating to help hide their addictions from their loved ones. However, as time goes by, the fake feelings threaten to turn into real ones. Can they overcome their demons in order to love themselves enough to love each other? You can only find out if you read.

If you’re ready for some really heavy times:

Underneath the Sycamore Tree

Underneath the Sycamore Tree by B. Celeste

Emery’s life has been full of grief for some time: Her twin passed due to an autoimmune disease, then her father left. When, 10 years later, Emery’s diagnosed with the same disease, her mother struggles with the weight of her own fears, and Emery finds herself moving in with her estranged dad in order to try to start anew. This is where she meets Kaiden, a man with his own struggles, but who sees her as more than just “sick” and allows her to grieve and grow along with him. A true emotional journey for both the characters and the reader.

If you’ve always been a planner:

In Five Years

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

We’ve all been asked in interviews the dreaded, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” question. For Dannie, this has always been an easy one to answer, and everything that she’s done in her life perfectly puts her on the path to achieving her dreams. She’s got the dream job and the fiancé, all in the same day, but when she falls asleep, she has a vision that the magic number of “5 years” has passed and she’s sleeping next to a stranger, and she wonders where everything went wrong. She wakes, shaken, ready to move on with her life, until she catches a glimpse of the strange man she was next to in her dream. This is also a deep look into female friendships, so maybe a buddy read with your book club besties is the way to go with this one!

If you believe love can heal all wounds:

Archer's Voice

Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

Bree is trying to escape a traumatic past when she ends up in a small town in Maine where she befriends a local man, Archer, who has secrets of his own weighing him down. Together, they can both work to heal each other, and maybe find something more than friendship in the process. But remember, small towns can be echo chambers, and secrets can only stay that way for long. For those who are in search of a perfect “book boyfriend,” Archer is going to check so many of those boxes for you and for Bree as well.
