Love can be a real witch: Romance novels about witches

The Halloween season may be upon us, but that doesn’t mean that love is (un)dead! I’m not a big scary movie person, so when I want to get into the Halloween mood, I don’t turn to the big screen, but rather to my tablet for some romance with a side of the paranormal.

While vampires and shape shifters have always been popular, over the last couple of years, there’s been an increase in romance books written about witches and magic, and I’m here for it! As a young kid obsessed with crystals, the moon and The Secret Circle books by LJ Smith, I’m happy to have some great witchy romance that’s more grown up but is still best read with a big mug of mulled cider next to a lit candle.

Witcha Gonna Do?

Witcha Gonna Do? by Avery Flynn

Being the only member of your super-powerful boss-witch family that doesn’t have powers isn’t easy on the best of days, but when Tilda accidentally “glitches” her sister’s spell and puts a curse on her entire clan, she has to team up with Gil to make things right. Why is this perhaps worse than the curse itself? Because Gil is one of the hottest witches around, knows it and is the most arrogant person that Tilda knows. Sparks and spells will fly! The narrator does break the 4th wall to talk directly to you, the reader, so if that isn’t your jam, here’s your warning, but if you like a bit of levity with your rom-coms, give this a try!

Extra Witchy

Extra Witchy by Ann Aguirre

If you haven’t read the first two books in the Fix-It Witches series, please stop reading this review and go and do that. I’ll wait...

Now that you’re back, let’s get ready for book 3! Back in our favorite small town coven, Leanne is on the hunt for husband number 3. She’s not looking for love, but for the political boost that will come as she runs for office as a married, rather than single woman (yes, gender roles and expectations are explored throughout!). Trevor is a sweet guy who just can’t break out and get his life going, so will this marriage of convenience (to a WITCH) be just what he needs to not only find love, but also the confidence he sorely needs? Read to find out!

Witchful Thinking

Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin

Small town second-chance romance your thing? Add a little bit of fake dating, and, you know, witches, and you get this great story! Did I also mention that the MMC (male main character for those who aren't as into romancelandia as I), is also a merman? Well, he’s a merman, and he needs the help of Lucy (who had a big crush on him in high school), to unjinx his home before he can put it on the market. As Lucy has had a run in with her own magic and is now incapable of saying “No,” she will help him even if she wants to stay away before he breaks her heart again. This town twinkles with magic and the couple sparkles with feeling as they continue to draw closer and closer together.

Back in a Spell

Back in a Spell by Lana Harper

Finally, a book on this list that doesn’t contain a “witch” pun in the title! This is the newest installment in The Witches of Thistle Grove series and returns us to another small town run by witches. Nina, serious and sensible, is looking to get back into dating after being left at the altar. When a dating app sets her up with fun and free-spirited Morty, their date goes about as well as can be expected, especially after Morty discovers that Nina’s family is trying to purchase their bar out from under them (Morty is non-binary and uses he/they pronouns). However, their connection, tenuous as it is, seems to go deeper than either of them can imagine, as their pairing brings to life Morty’s magic and sends Nina’s out of control. Definitely spicier than Harper’s other installments in the series, this one is definitely worth the read!

The Kiss Curse

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

I’m a huge fan of a good enemies-to-lovers story—if this list doesn’t show that already—and this new entry in the Ex-Hex series gives a perfect dose of hate to love, with more than a sprinkling of spice! Gwen is content with her life, her coven and her small business until Wells moves in and opens a rival magic shop across the street. The banter between the two of them is out of control, especially as their feelings move from hate to lust to something else. They’re forced to team up to investigate strange happenings when a new coven moves into town, and those little sparks lead to some big flames! This book is several chili peppers worth of heat, but will go down smoothly for those who like their romance with a good dose of flames.

Are you charmed yet? If you’re searching for witchy romance, check out one—or all—of these titles from your library through the Libby reading app.
