A little bit creepy, a whole lot cozy: Mysteries to read for Halloween

Oct 25, 2022

I live for Halloween. It is truly the ♫ most wonderful time of the year ♫ (sorry, Andy Williams, but it’s not Christmas for me). Bust out the costumes, the fun-sized candy bars, the pumpkin-spiced everything. I’m ready to curl up on the couch with my black cat, Boo (truly the most handsome little devil you’ve ever seen) and bring on the Halloween. But despite my love for the creepiest holiday around, my tolerance level for 'spine-tinglers' stops at around Hocus Pocus 2 (Hey, they try to eat children!). That’s why this list of cozy mysteries is right up my alley, and hopefully yours, too:

Steeped to Death

Steeped to Death by Gretchen Rue

The first in the Witches’ Brew Mystery series introduces protagonist Phoebe Winchester as she tries to uncover the truth behind her beloved aunt’s passing in the small town of Raven Creek. With a dash of the supernatural, this clever, witchy tea mystery has all the ingredients for a magical cozy.

Witch and Famous

Witch and Famous by Angela M. Sanders

Black cat on the cover? Me and Boo are in. This is the latest in the Witch Way Librarian series, and it serves up everything you need for a perfect cozy read: a spellbinding heroine, a clever cat, a glamorous movie star and (of course) a mysterious murder.

Mrs. Claus and the Halloween Homicide.

Mrs. Claus and the Halloween Homicide by Liz Ireland

Halloween AND Christmas? It’s a holiday treat! Christmastown is celebrating Halloween, but not everyone seems to be feeling festive. When an elf is found dead, April knows she must stop the Halloween killer. Cozy mystery fun for either season, or in between!

Be My Ghost

Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry

Instead of the typical cat companion, we meet Finn the golden retriever who flunked his guide dog test, and his owner, Maureen, whose own career has just hit a dead end. They take possession of an inn, only to find that they aren’t the only tenants— the only living ones at least.

Halloween Party Murder

Halloween Party Murder by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis & Barbara Ross

This collection of 3 novellas by bestselling authors Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis and Barbara Ross is the perfect way to satisfy your mystery fix in mini doses. Each story is set in Maine during Halloween season, each revolves around a Halloween party and, like any good mystery, someone always turns up dead.

Goosebumps Giveaway

When I was a kid growing up in the 90s, you could earn some serious cool cred for flashing a copy of the latest Goosebumps novel to the other kids at school. I wasn’t the only one in love with that oozy, drippy title font and the spine-tingling stories inside. R.L. Stine remains one of the most popular children’s writers in history.

Goosebumps giveaway

To celebrate the greatest season of all with one of the greatest writers of all, we’re giving away signed copies of 4 titles in the scary-good Goosebumps series from the King of Horror himself, R.L. Stine.
