6 books (not written by Colleen Hoover) that are trending on #BookTok

Sometimes it can seem for the newly initiated to #BookTok that there's only one author publishing today that's worth reading: Colleen Hoover. While she's truly a gem (It Starts with Us is out October 18!), the books below that are also #BookTok favorites might need to be moved up your TBR!

Mexican Gothic

Want a thriller Like Verity? Try Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Isolated house? Check. Rampant family secrets? Check. Keeps you guessing until a whirlwind ending? CHECK. This book does skew a bit more horror than Verity, but if you enjoyed the pacing, twists and turns, give this book a try. The writing is lush and descriptive, but, a warning, it might put you off mushrooms for a bit.

The Bromance Book Club

Want a second chance like All Your Perfects? Try The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

Who doesn’t want to read a book about a bunch of guys that realize women just want to be treated like the characters in romance novels? This book, the first in the series, is about a man and a woman who have grown apart and the power of friendship, honesty and dismantling toxic masculinity to bring them back together.

Boyfriend Material

Want a redemption story like Reminders of Him? Try Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

While certainly lower stakes, this has a whole bunch of things to love, including fake dating (my catnip, for sure), a whole bunch of family drama and truly delightful secondary characters. While rooting for our guys to finally admit that they've caught feelings and that they can overlook their “flaws,” you'll also think about dung beetles more than you ever planned.

People We Meet on Vacation

Want crossing paths like November 9? Try People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

I would recommend pretty much anything by Emily Henry, to be honest, but this book is just such a wonderful story. It jumps back and forth in time as we see two friends take wonderful vacations together every year, until two years ago, when something happened that put a wedge between them that they haven’t been able to get over. However, they're together again, so can things move forward?

My Summer Darlings

Want a twisty past like Confess? Try My Summer Darlings by May Cobb

Buckle up for secrets, long-standing friendships and a whole lot of small towns where everyone knows everything about everyone (or do they?). This is a story of a handsome stranger who moves in and shakes up the lives of three women in ways that will change them forever. If you’re a fan of Lianne Moriarty as well, this is one that you should definitely pick up.

Normal People

Want complicated family dynamics like Without Merit? Try Normal People by Sally Rooney

Hopefully you, like me, have watched Chloe Fineman and Casey Thomas Brown’s spoof of the Hulu adaptation of this book, but if you haven’t, please come back to this after you’ve done so. So. Many. Feelings. This book is dripping with longing, magnetism and questions about how two people from such different backgrounds can need to be together.
