What is Libby?

Libby is the newer library reading app by OverDrive, and loved by millions of readers worldwide. Borrow ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and more from your local library for free using your library card. You may be familiar with OverDrive’s legacy app. The OverDrive app will be discontinued in early 2023. Libby offers a fresh, easy-to-use design with access to the same great digital collections from your library. (Tell me more, you say?)

How do I get started with Libby?

Getting started is easy, promise! In 4 quick steps, you can start reading ebooks and audiobooks on your device.

1. Install the Libby app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

2. Follow the prompts to find your library and sign in with your library card.

3. Browse your library’s digital collection and borrow a title.

4. Borrowed titles appear on your Shelf and download to the app automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so you can read them when you're offline.

Voilà! You’re ready to read.

I don't know my library, card number or PIN. Where can I find it?

All you need is your library card number to get started reading on Libby. But what if you don’t know it, your library or your PIN? No problem! The Libby sign-in screen may have links from your library to help you with your card number and PIN (or password). If not, here are a few more tips:

  • Don’t know your library card number? Try checking the back of your library card. It may be under the barcode.
  • Don’t know your PIN? Try using the last 4 digits of your phone number or your birthday.

You can also reach out directly to your local library for help.

How do I get a library card?

Of course, your library can always provide you with a library card to access the digital collection as well as the other great resources it has to offer.

Your library may also have a way to get a card directly from Libby. If so, you'll see I Would Like A Library Card or Use My Phone Number at the top of your library’s home screen in Libby. Tap to get started and follow the prompts.

Can I read on my Kindle?

Yes! You can read most borrowed books with a Kindle device (available in the U.S. only). Get instructions on how to read on your Kindle.

Skip-the-line book

What are skip-the-line books?

If you find a skip-the-line book, it’s your lucky day! These books are marked with a shamrock icon. These are special copies set aside by your library in order to lend copies of popular books quickly and make more readers happy! They have a few rules for how they circulate:

  • Skip-the-line copies don't have wait lists
  • Skip-the-line copies can't be renewed
  • Your library may have shorter loan periods for them
  • Your library may limit the number you can borrow at a time

Why can't I send a book to Kindle?

If you're based in the U.S. and having trouble sending to Kindle, there are a few reasons why you may be having that issue:

1. The book may not be available for Kindle. You can check by tapping the book jacket, then scrolling to the "supports" section and looking for "Kindle."

2. You may have downloaded the book already in a different format in Libby, in the OverDrive app or on your library's OverDrive website. If you download another format (like EPUB), you can't send the book to Kindle from Libby unless you borrow it again.

Can I transfer ebooks to an ereader from Libby?

If you have a NOOK or similar ereader that's compatible with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), you can download Libby books on a computer, then use ADE to transfer them to your device. Here are detailed steps on how to do this.

You can add more than one library card in Libby.

How do I add more library cards?

More library cards = more books! Adding more than one library card in Libby is a great way to browse more titles. If you have more than one library card, be sure to add them to expand your access to more great ebooks and audiobooks. Tap the Libby menu, then Cards + (under “Your Libraries”). Tap Add Another Card and follow the prompts.

I need more help. Where should I go?
