One of my most anticipated reads of the year, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab, is coming out on June 10! It’s always a bittersweet moment when a highly anticipated book (or audiobook!) finally gets released. All the waiting is finally over, and you get to dive into a new world or revisit an old favorite if it’s a sequel.
If this book wasn’t on your radar, let me bring you up to speed. It’s a tale of three sapphic vampires set over five centuries by V. E. Schwab, author of the 2020 bestseller, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (more on this one below!).
In 16th century Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.
In 19th century London, a young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family's estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte's tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could've imagined.
Which brings us to 21st century Boston, where college was supposed to be a chance to be someone new. That's why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers...and revenge.
But then comes the age-old question—what comes next? If you’ve already binged this one or are on hold for your turn to read, here are some books similar to Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil to read next on the Libby app.
The Wren in the Holly Library by K. A. Linde
🎧 Audiobook
This is the first book in the Oak and Holly Cycle series. The story takes place 13 years after monsters emerged from the shadows and nearly ended the world as we know it. Then the monster treaty was created. Now Kierse, a talented thief, finds herself locked into a dangerous bargain with a charming and alluring monster after unknowingly breaking the treaty.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book on Libby and loved it so much I purchased a physical copy for my home library! This is also the perfect time to start this series because the second book, The Robin on the Oak Throne, comes out on June 17.
City of Ruin by Lindsay Pogue
🎧 Audiobook
This dystopian Jane Eyre retelling is the first book in the Ruined Lands series, a collection of historical fantasy and dystopian fairy tale retellings.
Centuries ago, the skies turned black, and for 300 years, Londoners survived in the dank underground tunnels of the city. Until one day, a stranger from a faraway land offered to save them. Though it wasn't without cost. When Selene is taken to Master Blackburn's infamous estate, she fears she and the orphans she's sworn to protect will meet a gruesome end. But the beastly landowner is not all there is to fear, and Selene soon learns nothing in Briarwood is as it seems.
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
🎧 Audiobook
This is a book that Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil author V. E. Schwab herself recommends.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Sundown in San Ojuela by M. M. Olivas
🎧 Audiobook
This is a great stand-alone fantasy novel if you’re not feeling a series.
When the death of her aunt brings Liz Remolina back to San Ojuela, the prospect fills her with dread. The isolated desert town was the site of a harrowing childhood accident that left her clairvoyant, the companion of wraiths and ghosts. Yet it may also hold the secret to making peace with a dark family history and a complicated personal and cultural identity. Setting out on the train with her younger sister Mary in tow, she soon finds herself hemmed in by a desolate landscape where monsters and ancient gods stalk the night.
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas
🎧 Audiobook
Maas offers another great urban fantasy option and one of my all-time favorite series. I would especially recommend this option if you’ve already read the entirety of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
Bryce Quinlan thought she had her life figured out—until a brutal murder upends her world. As she works with a brooding warrior to uncover the truth, she’s drawn into a web of magic, power, and deadly secrets.
Between a strong heroine and a gripping mystery, this is a great read for fans of action-packed fantasy with rich world-building. If you’re a fan of graphic audiobooks, there is a great dramatized, full cast option on Libby.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab
🎧 Audiobook
This is a great option if you haven’t already read V. E. Schwab’s other novels yet.
In 18th century France, in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.
The audiobook is narrated by the magnificently talented Julia Whelan who has narrated other favorites of mine such as Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry and The Women by Kristin Hannah.
