One of the most underrated Christmas traditions? Pulling out the plastic bin of decorations. Like unearthing a time capsule—I sort through the haphazardly wrapped ornaments, homemade crafts, and tangled lights, and wonder... what did I throw in here while sipping my New Year’s morning mimosa? Each ornament and knickknack has its own story, which I nostalgically impart on my daughter as we rustle through the pile.
“We got this when you were born!”
“This was your grandma’s.”
“Remember that trip when you were three? We got it there!”
After 9 years, she’s able to tell most of their stories now. And I especially love dusting off our collection of holiday books. Like the knickknacks, they each bring back a memory of reading under the tree or nestled under blankets in bed. As we pull out The Elf on the Shelf with pages torn and tattered from tiny, grabby toddler hands (did you know there’s now a cookbook!?), I wonder which ones she’ll remember fondly year after year.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg (1985)
A young boy, lying awake one Christmas Eve, is welcomed aboard a magical train to the North Pole.
At the top of my list, this classic is for all those who believe, come Christmas Eve, that they too will hear the sweet sound of a reindeer's silver bell.
Reading this story together has become a beloved tradition for many families. It was remade into an animated film featuring the voice of Tom Hanks in 2004.
