Books to pair with your favorite Halloween candy

Share:

As we near the end of October, many of us have already begun stockpiling Halloween candy for neighborhood trick-or-treaters (and possibly ourselves). Rest assured: This is a judgement free zone. Personally, I’m waiting until the day after Halloween for the discounted candy. That’s when the real stocking up begins!

But whether you’re already halfway through a party size bag of M&M’s or slowly sneaking Reese’s pumpkins from your stash, nothing goes better with candy than a good book—especially during scary season.

Here are some bingeable books from the Libby app to pair with a scary good treat.

Legends & Lattes

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree
🎧 Audiobook

This is the cozy fantasy we all need to get through Halloween. Viv is an orc who was wounded during a hunt for a necromancer and finds herself in a sleepy beach town to heal. She passes the time in the town’s bookshop—the last thing she’d ever expected to be doing. But adventure is never far behind, even in a sleepy beach town.

I love Viv and all the characters she meets in Murk. This is also a great choice if you’re new to fantasy or want something lighter to read on a cozy October evening.

🍬 Candy pairing: Reese’s pumpkins (full or snack sized)

Nothing says Halloween quite like the Reese’s pumpkin. It never disappoints and can be paired with just about anything. Charcuterie? Sure. Hot cocoa? Why not? Lattes? There's no limit to the imagination here. For best results, toss a few in the freezer and enjoy.

You Like It Darker

You Like it Darker by Stephen King
🎧 Audiobook

No Halloween would be complete without reading a Stephen King book. Whether you go for a classic like Carrie or his newest collection of short stories, he always manages to make the season just a little darker (no pun intended).

You Like it Darker is his latest collection of 12 short stories that dive into the darkness of life, literally and figuratively, and includes “Rattlesnakes,” the sequel to Cujo. It’s everything you’ve come to expect from Stephen King—fantastic storytelling, horror, and plot twists that leave you wondering what you just read.

Is it a lengthy read? Yes. Is it a terrifyingly wonderful addition to your Halloween? Also yes.

🍬 Candy pairing: Midnight Milky Way

In case you like your chocolate darker, too.

The Crescent Moon Tearoom

The Crescent Moon Tearoom by Stacy Sivinski
🎧 Audiobook

This was one of my most anticipated reads this month because the description reminded me of a cozier mix of Practical Magic and Charmed. The story is about three sisters—Violet, Anne, and Beatrix, who are witches and run the coziest tearoom that I truly wish was real. After the death of their parents, their lives are pulled in different directions.

We have the pleasure of seeing three stories woven into one while they discover that sisterhood can be even more powerful than magic. Each of their stories was so endearing that I couldn’t help but feel invested, leading me to devour the book in no time flat.

🍬 Candy pairing: A Witch’s Brew Kit Kat

Don’t let the green coloring deter you. I promise it’s just a normal Kit Kat. But what better way to enjoy a story about three witches than with a treat looking like it came from a cauldron or tearoom?

Starter Villain

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

Who doesn’t love a good supervillain origin story? Well, it would be an origin story if the supervillain wasn’t already dead. Charlie soon discovers this when he inherits his uncle’s supervillain business, and then deals with the enemies his uncle made.

Really, he should’ve been tipped off when the funeral mourners tried to stab his uncle’s body to make sure he was dead. There are so many aspects of this book that I love, including the unionized dolphins and the talking cats, just to name a few. But really, this is just a lighthearted, fun, romp of a book that takes itself just seriously enough.

🍬 Candy pairing: Any kind of Skittles

They’re chewy, sweet, fruity, and the exact opposite of this story. But they’re also colorful, much like Charlie and the cast of characters we meet.

Dungeons and Drama

Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce
🎧 Audiobook

If you love fake dating, Dungeons and Dragons, or both, borrow this adorable YA romance and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Riley is a theater girl who wants to make it big on Broadway. After some questionable choices, she’s grounded and stuck spending her free time working after school at her dad’s game shop.

Enter Nathan: the nerdy employee. The two strike a deal and Riley convinces Nathan to cover her shifts while Nathan gets Riley to join his Dungeons and Dragons group and flirt with him in front of his crush. Obviously, hijinks ensue. If you need a good rom-com to brighten up the rainy fall nights, this book is for you.

🍬 Candy pairing: Nerds gummy clusters

You could easily choose the original Nerds candy here, but I decided to go with the gummy clusters. Honestly, they’re a step up in the world of Nerds candy. The pink in the cluster is also a great match for the cover of the book.

The Last Thing He Told Me

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
🎧 Audiobook

If you need a little mystery and suspense in your story, look no further. This is a whirlwind of a book with a little bit of everything mixed in to create a plot that will hook you in no time.

Hannah is an absent-minded artist who loses just about everything, but one day, finds her husband missing and a note that says, “protect her.” With his boss arrested shortly after and phone calls going unanswered, the tension is higher than ever. Even with all the suspense and twists, this book finds a way to somehow be heart-wrenching at the same time.

🍬 Candy pairing: Snickers

Snickers have a little bit of everything, not unlike the plot of this story. And while I won’t compare chocolate, peanuts, and caramel to action, mystery, and heartbreak, you can’t deny that there's a little something for everyone.
