It’s a new year filled with new possibilities and, of course, new books! Here at Libby Life, we get the unique privilege of writing, talking and thinking about books all day (you should see our TBR lists 😅). So while you map out what you’re planning to read this year, let us give you a few recommendations of books we can’t wait to sink our teeth into on the Libby app.
Most of our eagerly awaited picks are coming out in 2024, but some are already published as we just haven’t gotten around to them yet (see note above re: long TBR).
I’m absolutely dying to read the latest installment of the Crescent City series, House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J Maas. I know half the internet is eagerly awaiting this release because of the love story, the world-building and that dramatic cliffhanger we were left with at the end of Book 2 almost two years ago!
Release date: Jan. 30, 2024
I cannot wait for The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness. The All Souls trilogy is one of my absolute favorite series, and I’m excited to dive back into that world and the new adventures of those characters.
Release date: July 16, 2024
I can't wait for Lydia Millet's first nonfiction book, We Loved It All; she focuses on nature and animals, climate advocacy, sharing the earth—and this memoir will combine her life's pains and joys with her reflections on a threatened planet.
Release date: April 2, 2024
I'm looking forward to reading Heartstopper #5 by Alice Oseman. Will Charlie and Nick's love survive university? I sure hope, so we can keep getting more books in this sweet and super-addictive graphic novel series. I've read each book in one sitting.
Release date: Available now
So, I've actually read this already, but I'm so excited about Bride by Ali Hazelwood! It's a completely different type of book for her (paranormal romance rather than STEM), but it's so compelling and really brings me back to my teenage love of all things vampires and werewolves!
Release date: Feb. 6, 2024
I’m very excited for End of Story, the new A.J. Finn book. I loved The Woman in the Window and am excited to see if this one is as buzzy and as popular!
Release date: Feb. 20, 2024
I'm looking forward to digging into The Silent Cry by Kenzaburo Oe. I've really enjoyed his other novels (particularly A Personal Matter), and I admire his fiction writing for its compassion, thoughtfulness and unflinching realism.
Release date: Available now
I’m looking forward to The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo. She’s one of my favorite auto-buy authors who writes incredible fantasy. I'm excited to dive into this historical fantasy novel set in Madrid during the Spanish Golden Age.
Release date: April 9, 2024
Cozy is the name of the game in 2024 and I cannot wait to read The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. This is a cozy, low-stakes fantasy for fans of Legends & Lattes about a librarian of spell books who flees her library with as many books as she can carry (what a hero) when it catches fire. She returns to her childhood home only to find the town in disrepair. A magical librarian and a fixer-upper town? All the hallmarks of a great read.
Release date: July 9, 2024
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros! I know I'm a bit behind on the hype, but I just got it for Christmas and it'll be the first book I read in 2024! I'm excited because I've heard nothing but good things and I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre, and maybe even a bigger fan of fiction with dragons, so this series sounds like a win-win to me.
Release date: Available now
I'm looking forward to reading A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine! I read the first book, A Memory Called Empire, in 2022 and it was phenomenal. It's a unique scifi space opera that borrows a lot from ancient history, linguistics, stateship and what it means to be a part of a larger whole. A very unique book that I would recommend to anyone who likes scifi!
Release date: Available now
I can't wait to dive into Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts: Stories and Recipes from Five Generations of Black Country Cooks. Part memoir, part cookbook? Count me in. I'm really looking forward to whipping up the recipes and reading the stories that I never got to hear despite growing up in Appalachia.
Release date: Jan. 23, 2024
I'm looking forward to What Have We Here? by Billy Dee Williams - particularly the audiobook in his silky, smooth voice. He's been a screen idol throughout my life and his role as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars was just the cherry on top! I can't wait to hear his story!
Release date: Feb. 13, 2024
I’m really looking forward to While We Were Burning by Sara Koffi (a debut described as "Parasite meets Such a Fun Age") as well as The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson because I just love everything she writes!
Release date: April 16, 2024
The art school nerd in me is really looking forward to Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez. My daughter and I spend a lot of time reading about female artists and although fictional, so much of this book seems like it could be based on the lives of most female artists. Their legacies are often overlooked or rooted in their gender vs. the art itself. There’s a mystery component in this one and I'm really excited to read it come March!
Release date: March 5, 2024
How much time do we have? 😂 Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff, Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross, Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver, None of This is True by Lisa Jewell, The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston and going through Rebecca Yarros’ backlist!
Release date: March 12, 2024
The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook by Hampton Side is my pick. I find Age of Exploration history fascinating, and I love any book that spends a lot of time on a sailing ship. So a new biography from Sides about Captain James Cook and his final voyage to Hawaii is an absolute must-read for me.
Release date: April 9, 2024
The Rom-Commers sounds right up my alley. Screenwriters working together on a rom com, enemies to lovers and the description includes, "She will convince him that love stories matter - even if she has to kiss him senseless to do it." !!! C'mon. 😍 I'm all in.
Release date: June 11, 2024
I cannot WAIT to read Middle of the Night by Riley Sager! His thrillers have been some of my favorite as of late, and I'm so excited to see him write a male protagonist.
